Stephen Austin is a former NFL Executive and founder of the NFL Regional and Super Regional Combines. Prior to joining the NFL, Stephen owned and operated ELITE Football Combines from 1990 until its purchase by the National Football League in 2010. Stephen was named Director of NFL Combine Properties, LLC, serving until 2016.
Stephen has provided player evaluation services to the NFL, NFL Europe, Canadian Football League, the XFL (2000) and the XFL (2020). In 2018, was retained by NFL Hall of Fame General Manager, Bill Polian, to direct combines for the new Alliance of American Football. In 2019, Stephen’s new company, American National Combines was selected by XFL Commissioner, Oliver Luck, as the official combine service to the new league.
Early in his career, Stephen was retained by the NFL to conduct combines throughout the U.S., Canada and England for the World League of American Football, later named NFL Europe. In 2000, Stephen was tapped by NBC Television, Vince McMahon, and the WWE to design and manage player tryouts for the start-up XFL pro football league.
As a technology innovator, Stephen was first to stream combine player videos to NFL teams (1995). He was also the first to create an online multi-criteria searchable database, enabling NFL teams to sort through thousands of player combine results using athletic test data and skill-set filters (1994). As an inventor, Stephen holds a U.S. Patent for a device that measures long and triple jump and is currently used at major track and field events including the U.S. Junior Olympics, USOC Paralympics, Mt SAC Relays and the Jesse Owens Classic.
In 2004 Stephen was named Co-Chairman, along with former Notre Dame Head Coach, Tyrone Willingham, to lead the NFL Youth Football program, National Athletic Testing Service (NATS). While chairing NATS Stephen designed the first online academic calculator app to enable high school players to track their grades and progress toward NCAA core-course eligibility.
Throughout his professional career, Stephen has provided sports and entertainment services to sports organizations, TV networks, production companies, casting agencies, and corporations. From 2005 to 2009 Stephen served as lead consultant for original sports content programming development at CBS/King World Television.
In 2014, while at the NFL, Stephen created, produced and was lead talent (season one) in the two-time Emmy nominated NFL Network hit show, “UnDrafted”. UnDrafted is the highest rated show in NFL Network history.
Since the success of UnDrafted, Stephen has created numerous unscripted content for television, cable and OTT platforms. Stephen’s shows have been optioned by major production companies including Collins Avenue (Dance Moms), 3-Arts (Brooklynn Nine-Nine) and Remedy Content (Jack Hanna). Currently, Stephen has an exclusive first-look partnership with John Legend’s new production company, Get Lifted Films.
In 2018, based on nationwide football industry demand, Stephen founded American National Combines to serve the NFL, CFL and XFL.
